15 ChatGPT Passport Size Photo Prompts: White Background, Right Crop, What Gets Rejected (2026)

15 ChatGPT passport size photo prompts: white background, correct crop, even light, US, UK, India, Canada, and Australia frames, and what gets rejected.

TL;DR

Fifteen ChatGPT passport size photo prompts that turn a plain phone photo into a passport-style picture without touching the face: plain white or off-white background with no shadow, head-and-shoulders crop at a named size, even frontal light, expression kept, and glasses glare removed only where glasses are allowed. Country frames cover the United States, United Kingdom and Schengen, India, Canada, and Australia by aspect ratio and head height, followed by clean-up fixes, a six-up print sheet, and a soft copy for online forms. Many authorities reject digitally altered photos, so every result is a draft to check against official rules.

A ChatGPT passport size photo prompt turns a plain phone photo into a passport-style picture: white or off-white background, head centered, even light, neutral expression, cropped to a named size. Use it to prepare and check a photo. Many passport and visa authorities reject digitally altered photos, and some ban AI-edited or retouched photos outright, so read the issuing authority's current rules before you submit anything official. Here are 15 prompts for the job.

What Makes ChatGPT Passport Size Photo Prompts Work

A passport photo is the most restricted edit you will ever ask ChatGPT Images 2.0 for. Every other photo edit wants the picture to look better; this one wants the picture to look untouched, inside a frame that an official, or an automated checker, will measure. That changes what a good prompt does. It says almost nothing about the face and a great deal about the frame.

Edit the frame, never the face. The one line that belongs in every prompt here is "do not change my facial features, skin tone, eye color, hair, or expression." Passport rules are built around the face matching the person at the counter, and most authorities treat any retouching as grounds for rejection. Background, shadow, crop, rotation, and white balance are the only edits worth asking for.

Name the frame by size and head proportion. "Passport size" means different things in different countries: 2 x 2 inches in the United States and India, 35 x 45 mm in the United Kingdom, the Schengen area, and Australia, 50 x 70 mm in Canada. Each one also specifies how tall the head must be inside that frame, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. A prompt that gives both numbers gets a frame you can check with a ruler. A prompt that says "passport size" gets a guess.

Ask for white, even, and shadowless in one sentence. The three most common background rejections are a shade that is not the required one, a gradient or texture, and a shadow on the wall behind the head. Write all three into the background line: "plain, even white, no gradient, no texture, no shadow behind my head or shoulders." Then name the light you want on the face, which is soft and frontal, so the model does not invent a side light that puts a shadow back.

Keep the expression you already have. Do not ask ChatGPT to close your mouth, open your eyes, or neutralize a smile. Changing an expression is changing the face, and it is exactly the kind of edit an authority bans. Take the photo with the expression the rules require, then tell ChatGPT to keep it exactly as it is.

Crop and rotate; do not redraw. Without the selection brush, ChatGPT regenerates the whole frame from your photo plus your instruction, so an unprotected edit can quietly narrow a jaw or move an eye while it is working on the background. The keep list limits that drift. The stronger safeguard is asking for geometric operations only: "crop only, rotate only, do not regenerate any part of my face." Where a tilt or a crop can be done in your phone's photo editor with no AI at all, that is the safer tool.

Treat the result as a draft, not a submission. Compare the output to the original at full size: eye spacing, hairline, ear shape, the gap in your teeth, a mole. If anything moved, the photo is both a worse likeness and a digitally altered one. Then read the current rules for the authority you are applying to, because several run automated checks and will tell you before you pay whether the photo passes.

These prompts are the passport-specific slice of the wider ChatGPT photo editing prompts playbook. If none of them fits your frame, the AI prompt generator builds one from a sentence like "crop to 35 x 45 mm, white background, keep my face unchanged."

ChatGPT passport size photo prompts across 4 categories: core passport edits, country frames, fixes and clean-ups, and printing and soft copies

How to make a passport-style photo in ChatGPT, in six steps:

1

Take a fresh photo. Phone at eye level about 1.5 meters away, you facing a window for even light, a plain wall behind you, hair off your face, neutral expression, mouth closed, no hat, no glasses unless your authority allows them.

2

Upload it in a new chat so no earlier image bleeds into the result, and confirm it shows full size and the right way up.

3

Name the frame: the print size, the aspect ratio, and the head height from chin to crown that your authority specifies.

4

Say what to keep and what to change. Keep facial features, skin tone, eye color, hair, and expression; change only the background, the shadow, the crop, or the tilt.

5

Check the result against the official template. Measure the head height, confirm the background shade, and look for any shadow or any drift in your features.

6

Download it, print at actual size or resize it for the online form, and delete the chat.

Warning

Many passport and visa authorities reject photos that have been digitally altered, and several, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, state that retouched or software-altered photos will not be accepted. Use these prompts to prepare and check a compliant-looking photo for low-stakes IDs, for applications that explicitly allow digital photos, and for practice before a booth or studio visit, and read the issuing authority's current rules before you submit anything official. Never alter facial features, skin, or eye color. Children's photos and ID documents deserve extra care: edit only your own photo or your own child's, never someone else's, keep the original file, and delete the chat when you are done.

What Will Get a Passport Photo Rejected

Before the prompts, the rejection list, because the prompts are written to avoid it. Rules differ by country, and they change, so treat this as a map of what to check rather than the rules themselves.

Digital alteration. This is the one that matters most for anything made in ChatGPT. The United States says photos must not be digitally changed or filtered; the United Kingdom says they must not have been altered using software; Canada and Australia use similar wording. In practice an officer cannot always tell a background swap from a photo taken against a real white wall. A face that does not quite match the person in front of them is noticed, and an automated checker will flag a face that looks smoothed or redrawn. The safe reading of every rule set is this: a clean phone photo against a real plain wall is always acceptable, an AI-edited one is a risk you take knowingly.

Background and shadows. The shade is specific: white or off-white for the United States, plain cream or light grey for the United Kingdom, plain white for India, white or light-colored for Canada, and a plain light shade for Australia and most Schengen countries, several of which do not accept pure white. Any shadow on the background, any shadow under the chin or down one side of the nose, and any pattern or gradient are grounds for rejection almost everywhere.

Head size and position. Each authority states a head height from chin to crown and a frame size, and the ratio between them is what a checker measures. Too close and the top of the hair is cut off; too far and the head is too small. The eyes usually need to sit in a stated band as well, and the head must be straight, facing the camera, not tilted or turned.

Expression, eyes, and mouth. Neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes open and visible, looking straight at the camera. The United States allows a natural smile with the mouth closed; Canada and Australia require a neutral face. Young children get more latitude, with the exact rules depending on age, and infants are usually allowed to have a slightly open mouth or an off-center gaze.

Glasses, hats, and head coverings. The United States does not allow glasses in passport photos at all. Most other authorities allow them only if the eyes are fully visible with no glare and no tinted lenses, and several recommend removing them anyway. Hats and head coverings are allowed only for religious or medical reasons, and even then the full face must be visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.

Age of the photo, paper, and file. The United States requires a photo taken within the last six months; the United Kingdom asks for one taken within the last month. Printed photos must be on photo paper with no creases, pen marks, or holes. Digital uploads have pixel and file-size limits set on each authority's page, and a compressed or filtered JPEG can fail the automated check even when the framing is right.

Canada50 x 70 mm31 to 36 mmPlain white or light-coloredAllowed if eyes clearly visible, no glare, no tint
Australia35 x 45 mm32 to 36 mmPlain light; confirm the shadeRemove where possible; eyes fully visible

Two notes on the table. Canada requires passport photos to be taken by a commercial photographer, stamped on the back with the studio name and the date, so a ChatGPT result is only ever a practice check for a Canadian passport. And every figure above should be confirmed on the issuing authority's own page on the day you apply; where this post leaves a cell as "check the current spec," it is because the figure could not be stated with confidence.

Core Passport Edits (1–5)

These five are the ChatGPT passport size photo prompts most people need and nothing more: a plain background, the right crop, even light, the expression kept, and glasses handled correctly. Each one does a single job so you can check it before stacking the next. Run them in order on the same photo, or use the one that fixes the one thing wrong with a shot that is otherwise compliant. Every prompt keeps the face out of the edit by name.

1. Plain White Background With No Shadow

code
Using my uploaded photo, replace the background with plain, even
white (#ffffff): no gradient, no texture, no shadow on the wall
behind my head and shoulders. Keep my face shape, features, skin
tone, eye color, hair, ears, expression, pose, framing, and head
size exactly as in the uploaded photo. Match the existing soft
frontal light on my face. Clean hair edges, no halo, no cut-out
look. Do not retouch or reshape anything. Same aspect ratio as the
upload.

What you'll get: A passport-white background with every pixel of the face left alone.

Variation: Swap white for "off-white (#f5f5f0)" or "plain light grey (#d9d9d9)" where the authority asks for it.

2. Head-and-Shoulders Crop at 35 x 45 mm

code
Crop my uploaded photo to a 35 x 45 mm portrait ratio (7:9) with my
head centered left to right, clear space between the top of my hair
and the top edge, and the top of my shoulders visible at the bottom.
Crop only: do not stretch, warp, rotate my head, or regenerate any
part of the image. Keep my face, features, skin tone, hair,
expression, pose, and proportions exactly as in the uploaded photo.
Fill any empty corner with the same plain background only. No
border, no text.

What you'll get: A correctly proportioned frame made by cropping rather than redrawing.

Variation: Change the ratio line to "2 x 2 inch square (1:1)" for the United States and India formats.

3. Even Frontal Light

code
Relight my uploaded photo for a passport photo: soft, even frontal
light with no shadow on either side of my nose, under my chin, or
behind my head. Remove the hard shadow on the [LEFT / RIGHT] side of
my face and the shine on my forehead. Keep my face shape, features,
skin tone, eye color, hair, expression, pose, and framing exactly as
in the uploaded photo. Natural skin texture: no smoothing, no
brightening or darkening of my skin, no red-eye, no color cast.
Same crop.

What you'll get: Flat, booth-style light with your skin tone unchanged.

Variation: Add "keep the small catchlights in both eyes" if the first result looks lifeless.

4. Neutral Expression and Closed Mouth Kept

code
Do not change my expression. My uploaded photo already has a neutral
face, closed mouth, and both eyes open looking straight at the
camera; keep all of that exactly as it is. Replace only the
background with plain white, remove the shadow behind my head, and
center my head in a [35 x 45 mm / 2 x 2 inch] frame. Keep my face
shape, features, skin tone, eye color, hair, ears, pose, and head
size exactly as in the uploaded photo. No smile added, no teeth, no
eye widening, no head straightening, no retouching.

What you'll get: A compliant-looking frame with your real expression carried through untouched.

Variation: If your authority accepts a natural closed-mouth smile, write "keep my closed-mouth smile exactly as it is."

5. Remove Glasses Glare, Keep Glasses Only Where Allowed

code
I am keeping my glasses because my issuing authority allows them.
Remove the reflections and glare on both lenses so both eyes are
fully visible through clear lenses. Keep the frame shape, color,
and position exactly as they are, and keep my eye color, eye shape,
gaze, face shape, features, skin tone, hair, expression, pose, and
framing exactly as in the uploaded photo. Match the even frontal
light on the rest of my face. Do not remove or thin the frames, do
not redraw my eyes, no tint on the lenses.

What you'll get: Clear lenses with your real eyes behind them and the frames untouched.

Variation: Where glasses are not allowed, as in the United States, retake the photo without them instead of asking ChatGPT to remove them.

Country Frames (6–10)

One frame per authority, each asking for the exact aspect ratio and the head proportion from chin to crown, and each carrying the line "do not change my facial features." The figures match the published specs as of this writing, with the India head height left open because it could not be confirmed. Confirm every number on the official page before you print or upload, and remember that Canada requires a commercial photographer for passport photos, so prompt 9 is for practice and for Canadian applications that accept a digital photo. If you only need a plain backdrop and not a country frame, the ChatGPT background prompts post covers solid-color and studio backgrounds in more depth.

6. United States 2 x 2 Inch Frame

code
Crop and prepare my uploaded photo as a United States passport-style
photo: 2 x 2 inch square (51 x 51 mm, 1:1), my head centered, and
my head measured from the bottom of my chin to the top of my head
filling between 1 and 1 3/8 inches of the 2 inch height, so roughly
50 to 69 percent of the frame. Plain white or off-white background,
no shadow. Even frontal light. Do not change my facial features,
skin tone, eye color, hair, expression, or head shape. Crop and
background only, no retouching, no glasses added or removed.

What you'll get: A square frame at the US head proportion, made by cropping rather than redrawing.

Variation: Add "eyes between 1 1/8 and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom edge" to match the US eye-height band.

7. United Kingdom and Schengen 35 x 45 mm Frame

code
Crop and prepare my uploaded photo as a 35 x 45 mm passport-style
photo (35 mm wide, 45 mm high, 7:9) for a [UK / SCHENGEN]
application. Head centered, with my head height from chin to crown
filling [29 to 34 mm FOR THE UK / 32 to 36 mm FOR MOST SCHENGEN
STATES] of the 45 mm height, and clear space above my hair.
Background: plain [CREAM OR LIGHT GREY FOR THE UK / THE LIGHT SHADE
THE COUNTRY SPECIFIES], no shadow, no pattern. Even frontal light.
Do not change my facial features, skin tone, eye color, hair,
expression, or head shape. Crop and background only, no retouching.

What you'll get: The 7:9 frame most of Europe uses, at the head proportion of the authority you named.

Variation: For the UK's online service, add "export as a JPEG with no border" and let the official photo checker give the verdict.

8. India Passport Seva 2 x 2 Inch Frame

code
Crop and prepare my uploaded photo as an India Passport Seva style
photo: 2 x 2 inch square (51 x 51 mm, 1:1) with my full face
centered, front view, head straight, and my face filling most of
the frame with a little clear space above my hair. Plain white
background with no shadow behind my head or on my face, no border.
Even frontal light, natural skin tone. Do not change my facial
features, skin tone, eye color, hair, expression, or head shape.
Crop and background only, no retouching, no filters.

What you'll get: A square white-background frame in the Passport Seva layout, ready to check against the current spec.

Variation: For a visa to another country, swap the frame line for that country's size and background shade.

9. Canada 50 x 70 mm Frame

code
Crop and prepare my uploaded photo as a Canadian passport-style
photo: 50 mm wide by 70 mm high (5:7), my head centered, with my
head height from chin to crown filling 31 to 36 mm of the 70 mm
height, and clear space above my hair. Plain white or light-colored
background, no shadow, no pattern. Even frontal light, neutral
expression with mouth closed exactly as in my photo. Do not change
my facial features, skin tone, eye color, hair, expression, or head
shape. Crop and background only, no retouching.

What you'll get: The taller 5:7 frame Canada uses, at its head proportion, as a practice check before the studio visit.

Variation: Ask for "a plain light grey background" if the form you are using names that shade.

10. Australia 35 x 45 mm Frame

code
Crop and prepare my uploaded photo as an Australian passport-style
photo: 35 mm wide by 45 mm high (7:9), head centered, with my head
height from chin to crown filling 32 to 36 mm of the 45 mm height,
eyes level and open, mouth closed, neutral expression exactly as in
my photo. Plain light background with no shadow, in the shade the
Australian Passport Office specifies. Even frontal light, natural
skin tone. Do not change my facial features, skin tone, eye color,
hair, expression, or head shape. Crop and background only, no
retouching, no glasses added.

What you'll get: The 7:9 frame at Australia's head proportion, with the background shade left for you to confirm.

Variation: For a child's photo, keep the same frame and accept an open mouth or off-center gaze only if the current rules for that age allow it.

Fixes and Clean-Ups (11–13)

These three ChatGPT passport size photo prompts fix the problems that get a nearly good photo rejected: stray hair and shadows, a yellow or blue cast from indoor light, and a head that is a few degrees off level. Each one is a global or background-only operation that leaves the face alone, and each one says so. If the problem is on the face itself, such as red-eye or a blemish, retake the photo rather than editing it, because that edit is the kind authorities ban. For general sharpening and clean-up outside a passport context, see ChatGPT photo enhance prompts.

11. Remove Stray Hair and Shadows

code
Light clean-up only on my uploaded passport-style photo. Remove the
flyaway hairs sticking out beyond my hairline, the shadow my head
casts on the background, and the shadow under my chin. Fill the
background with the same plain [WHITE / LIGHT GREY] it already has.
Keep my hairline, hair volume, and hair color, and keep my face
shape, features, skin tone, eye color, expression, pose, framing,
and head size exactly as in the uploaded photo. No skin smoothing,
no blemish removal, no reshaping. Same crop and aspect ratio.

What you'll get: Clean edges and a flat background with nothing on the face touched.

Variation: Paint only the background with the selection brush and type just the shadow line, so the face is never inside the edited region.

12. Fix Uneven White Balance

code
Correct the white balance of my uploaded passport-style photo so the
background reads as neutral [WHITE / LIGHT GREY] with no yellow,
blue, or green cast, and my skin tone reads as it does in daylight.
Apply one global correction to the whole image; do not edit my face
separately or lighten, darken, or warm my skin beyond removing the
cast. Keep my face shape, features, eye color, hair, expression,
pose, framing, and head size exactly as in the uploaded photo. No
contrast boost, no saturation boost, no vignette. Same crop.

What you'll get: A cast-free photo with your real skin tone, not a brightened version of it.

Variation: Add "the photo was taken under warm indoor bulbs" so the model knows which cast to remove.

13. Correct a Tilted Head by Cropping, Not Redrawing

code
My head is tilted about [5] degrees to the [LEFT / RIGHT] in my
uploaded photo. Rotate the whole image by that amount so my eyes are
level, then crop back to a [35 x 45 mm (7:9) / 2 x 2 inch (1:1)]
frame with my head centered. Rotate and crop only: do not redraw,
warp, or straighten my face, neck, or shoulders separately, and do
not regenerate any part of my face. Keep my features, skin tone,
eye color, hair, expression, and head size exactly as in the
uploaded photo. Fill empty corners with the plain background only.

What you'll get: Level eyes from a geometric rotation, with your face pixels left where they were.

Variation: If the tilt is more than about 10 degrees, retake the photo; the crop will cut too much of your shoulders.

Printing and Soft Copies (14–15)

The last two prompts turn a checked photo into something you can hand over: a print sheet for a pharmacy or home printer, and a JPEG for an online form. Two honesty notes. ChatGPT Images 2.0 lays out a sheet to a described size, so print it at actual size with "fit to page" turned off and measure a copy with a ruler before cutting; if it is off, the layout step is better done in a free photo tool. And ChatGPT does not control the pixel dimensions or the file name of what you download, so the final resize and the rename happen on your device.

14. 4 x 6 Inch Print Sheet With Six Photos

code
Lay out my uploaded passport-style photo on a 4 x 6 inch print sheet
(2:3 landscape) as six identical copies at exactly 35 x 45 mm each,
arranged in 2 columns by 3 rows, with thin light grey cutting guides
between them and a plain white margin around the set. Place the
photo as-is: do not resize the head, change the crop, alter colors,
or regenerate the photo in any copy. Every copy must be identical to
the upload. No text, no logos, no borders inside the photos. Output
at the highest resolution available.

What you'll get: A six-up sheet for a standard 4 x 6 print; measure one copy before you cut.

Variation: For 2 x 2 inch photos, ask for "3 columns by 2 rows"; six fill the sheet edge to edge, so the guides sit on the boundaries. Canada's 50 x 70 mm fits four, not six.

15. Soft Copy Sized for an Online Application

code
Export my uploaded passport-style photo as a soft copy for an online
application. Keep the [35 x 45 mm (7:9) / 2 x 2 inch (1:1)] crop
exactly as it is, with my head centered and the plain [WHITE / LIGHT
GREY] background unchanged. Output a JPEG with no border, no text,
no watermark, no filter, and no change to my features, skin tone,
eye color, hair, or expression. If you cannot output exact pixel
dimensions, say so and give me the largest clean image in the same
ratio so I can resize it to [WIDTH x HEIGHT FROM THE OFFICIAL PAGE]
under [FILE SIZE LIMIT]. Suggest a plain file name for the upload.

What you'll get: A clean JPEG in the right ratio; the exact pixel size and the file name are set on your device.

Variation: Rename the download to something plain, such as "lastname-firstname-passport-photo.jpg", before uploading it to the form.

Tips for Better ChatGPT Passport Size Photo Prompt Results

Fix the photo at capture, not in the chat. Every edit you avoid is a rule you cannot break. Stand about a meter from a plain pale wall so your shadow falls out of frame, face a window for even light, hold the phone at eye level, and have someone else take it or use a timer so the arm's-length distortion is gone. A photo that already has a plain background and even light needs only a crop, which is the one edit nobody will object to.

Run the checks in order: alteration, background, head, eyes. Open the result and the original side by side at full size. Measure the head height against the frame and compare it to the spec. Then look at eye spacing, the hairline, ear shape, and any mark on your face; if anything moved, discard the result and regenerate from the original, because an edit of a drifted edit drifts further.

Use the selection brush for the background and nothing else. Painting the background and typing a background-only instruction keeps the face outside the regenerated region, which is the strongest protection there is against drift. Do not brush near hair edges or glasses, where a painted boundary leaves fringe, and never brush the face.

Shoot a child against a white sheet, then crop. Children's photos are the ones most worth keeping away from AI edits: the rules for infants are looser on expression and gaze, the face changes quickly so the likeness must be exact, and the photo is a record of a minor. Lay the child on a plain white sheet in daylight, take several frames, and ask ChatGPT only to crop. Delete the chat afterwards.

Forbid the quiet edits with a negative prompt. "No skin smoothing, no face reshaping, no eye color change, no teeth whitening" belongs in every passport prompt, because a checker compares the photo against the person and an over-edited face is the fastest route to a rejection.

When in doubt, use the official checker or a booth. The United Kingdom's online service checks your digital photo before you pay; other authorities publish a template with the head bands drawn on. If your application is high stakes, a passport photo booth or a studio costs a few dollars and produces a photo that is compliant by construction, and nothing in this post is meant to replace that.

Tip

Write the keep list first and make it longer than the change: facial features, skin tone, eye color, hair, ears, expression, pose, head size. Then state the frame as size plus head height, name the background shade with a hex code, and end with "crop and background only, no retouching." That order reads as a rule to the model and leaves it nothing to improve.
