Prompt Routing

Prompt routing is the practice of automatically directing each user prompt to the most suitable AI model based on task type, complexity, and cost constraints. Instead of sending every request to a single expensive model, a routing layer analyzes the prompt and selects the optimal model — using a powerful model for complex reasoning and a smaller, cheaper model for simple tasks.

Example

A customer support system uses prompt routing to handle incoming queries. Simple FAQ questions like "What are your business hours?" get routed to a fast, low-cost model. Complex troubleshooting requests like "My integration is throwing a 403 error after updating the API key" get routed to a more capable reasoning model.
